Industrialised Building System

“Industrialised Building System (IBS) is a building system in which structural components are manufactured in a factory, on or off site, transported and assembled into a structure with minimal additional site works.”
- Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB)

IBS implies the extensive use of pre-fabricated or modular components which are assembled on site with minimal personnel in the most speedy and efficient manner.

In Malaysia, many projects, particularly in the construction of buildings, bridges, drains and other infrastructure have utilised IBS extensively. Famous examples of IBS constructions are the Petronas Twin Towers, Sepang International Circuit and Stadium Bukit Jalil.

The Advantages of IBS

The benefits of IBS are numerous:

  • Less on-site workers and trades
  • Quality-controlled and highly aesthetic end-products
  • Cleaner and safer sites due to reduction of construction materials, timber formworks, props and construction waste at sites
  • All weather construction and erection
  • Faster completion
  • Technical advantages such as longer spans and greater loads.
  • Cheaper total construction costs due to all of the above
